Research the Company

Use a search engine or find out the website address and research before your interview.

Make sure you know who you are speaking to

Memorise the person’s name you are going to be interviewing with and ensure you have the role title correct when you are discussing it. Say their name out aloud a few times before you get to the interview.

Prepare sample responses

Think about questions you will be asked and prepare responses to them, go over these a few times and say out loud to make sure you have the right answer.

Appropriate attire

Ensure you are dressed appropriately for the organisation’s culture and ensure that you look neat and tidy.

Be on time

Arrive 5 or 10 minutes early to the office and if you don’t know where you are going ensure you leave sufficient time to ‘get lost’. If you can, check out where the appointment will be before your interview and note how long it will take to get there.

Talk about your achievements

Discuss how you’ve achieved previous outcomes that relate to what the company is wanting to achieve.

Listen

Listen to the interviewer; there isn’t anything more embarrassing than asking a question the interviewer has already clarified.

Speak positively

Don’t talk about negative experiences or give excuses about previous employers or roles. State positives as much as possible and talk about the lessons you have learnt from the bad experiences.

Follow up

Ask in the interview what the next steps are going to be, and if they want you to follow up with them, also find out when they would like you to follow up with them and how i.e. via email or telephone.

As more employers utilise Zoom, Skype and other video platforms for interviews, saving time and money, here are som,e OnTalent tips for making that first online interview a great one.

Find a quiet place

Ensure you partake in your web interview in a quiet room. There is nothing worse than having someone walk-in or the dog constantly barking in your interview – it is distracting to both parties.

Make sure the room is well lit

If the room is too dark the employer may find dark shadows on across your face which will be distracting.

Make sure the webcam and telephone system is set up properly

Ensure that the technology is set up correctly – test it with a friend well before your interview to make sure it’s all working right.

Ensure a strong internet connection and provide a phone connection for back up

Always try as hard as possible to access a strong internet connection and give the interview conductor your landline or mobile number for back up and to potentially solve any sound issues.

Dress like you are going to a face to face interview

Dress as if you were going to the client’s corporate office, this will get you straight into the corporate feel, even though you are in the comfort of your own home or office.

Talk directly into the webcam

Talk directly into the webcam (as this is considered making eye contact through technology) rather than constantly looking at the screen, it is off-putting and gives the impression you are not concentrating.

Have the picture box of the interviewer at eye level

If you drag the box where you can see the interviewer to your eye level you will be able to be looking directly at them throughout the interview – if you don’t do this it looks like you are constantly looking away from them and could give the impression you are distracted.
