The Mechanical Designer manages the technical and commercial aspects of programme delivery for the commodities they are responsible for.

From an operational and delivery perspective, the Mechanical Designer will: 
  • Oversee the decision making associated with strategic technical architecture decisions that effect the core platform.
  • Ensuring the integration of the individual systems is able to deliver the required functional requirements of the product.
  • Mentoring and guiding Design Release Engineers to deliver systems, sub-systems and components within the respective commodity group to optimize the design in terms of usability in other products. This includes interfaces to system integrator, suppliers, manufacturing, Quality, Engineering Technical Services, Supply Chain, Validation and Certification, Service and Customer Experience.
  • Design of products, tools and equipment using CAD and Windchill PLM;
  • Actively engage with key internal and external stakeholders to understand the business strategy, know the business domain, actively identify impacts and ensure they are highlighted within the project
  • Support the Product Management Teams by adding technical excellence to proposals and presentations; managing the interface between the ‘Customer’ and Engineering and other internal interfaces.
  • Work with the production engineering team to reduce product costs by improving production processes and component designs
  • Modify designs and engage with alternative suppliers to reduce part costs
  • Development and design of components, subassemblies and top-assemblies through full product development lifecycle (mechanical development) – concept, validate via virtual methods, prototype build and validation through to full production and servicing.
  • Close collaboration with the Manufacturing Engineers to make sure designs are manufacturable, are fit for purpose and adhere to DFM/DFA principles;
  • Serve as an internal mechanical design consultant, primarily for Engineering & Manufacturing, ensuring Quality, and Cost Reduction efforts are being addressed, implemented and sustained.
To be successful in this role you will have extensive experience in design for manufacturing. You will will have experience across the following:  
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Design or related technology qualifications.
  • Very competent in 3D CAD modelling and the use of SOLIDWORKS.
  • Experience in Windchill PLM or other similar PLM/PDM system.
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Experience in the design of Jigs/Fixtures and Tooling to ensure manufacturability.
  • Experience in Design for Assembly / Design for Manufacturing.
  • Experience in mechanical design at both review stages as well as post design product improvements and the design of small form parts that may include - bezels, brackets, enclosures etc. with materials knowledge that will include – plastics, composites, aluminium, metals etc.
  • Experience of Agile PD (Product Development) processes as well as experience and understanding of iterative incremental development processes.
  • Experience in the development of products/NPD Lifecycle in particular the integration of electronic components, PCB’s, HMI modules, harnesses etc seen in an “outdoor” remote based technical platform.
  • Experience in an Automotive or High Technology Manufacturing environment would be of interest.
  • Strong autonomous background and ability to self-manage time and tasks.
  • Proven accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Solid written & verbal communication skills.
  • Hands-on and practical approach.
  • Enthusiasm and highly motivated.
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
  • On occasion the ability to travel where required to facilitate the outcomes required in this position.
