As an emergency service department, Queensland Fire Department (QFD) is responsible for ensuring the safety of people and property across Queensland through the provision of effective prevention, preparedness, response and recovery activities across a range of emergency situations.

QFD is a primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) and Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and is supported by a significant volunteer workforce to deliver its key functions.

Established as a dedicated fire department, QFD is committed to strengthening service delivery to meet the needs of Queensland communities.

Reporting to the Commissioner QFD, you will lead the performance of the Chief Fire Office which provides advice to the Commissioner relating to service delivery, operational culture, best practice, innovation and research. The role of the Chief Fire Officer was established in the Fire Services Act 1990.

 As the Chief Fire Officer your responsibilities will include: 

  • provide advice and insight on matters of operational practice that ensures continuous improvement, identification and implementation of innovative approaches that lift service delivery and safety outcomes;
  • monitoring operational culture and implementing actions to drive positive cultural change;
  • establishing and driving implementation of formal interoperability planning to support the integration of fire and emergency services;
  • analysing lessons from major events, engaging with the capability framework, and applying innovation and best practice to identify and test solutions to enhance business and operational practices;
  •  identifying opportunities to undertake research to inform future strategy.

 

To be eligible for appointment as Chief Fire Officer you must have:

  • professional fire fighting experience; and
  • incident control expertise; and
  • fire prevention expertise.

 

To be successful in this critical role you will have:

  • A record of success as a leader in a large and complex organisation with outstanding leadership ability;
  • Extensive experience as a qualified professional fire officer and a background in strategy and policy implementation, service delivery and client service;
  • A proven record as an agent of change in challenging environments and in fostering a confident and capable workforce.
